How to fix "Missing value [age_group]" in Shopify for Google Merchant Center

Google requires age_group for apparel. Set it in Shopify by giving the product a standard product category, which unlocks the age group category metafield, then confirm the value reaches Merchant Center.

Quick answer

age_group is a Google Merchant Center attribute that tells Google the intended age range for a product, and Google requires it for all apparel. In Shopify, the current way to set it is to give the product a standard product category, which unlocks the built-in category metafields — including age group — then fill in the value so it syncs to Merchant Center.

The five accepted values are newborn, infant, toddler, kids, and adult. For most clothing, the answer is adult. If more than a handful of products show this error, fix age_group, gender, color, and size together — for apparel they fail as a set.

Why Google is flagging age_group

Google needs to know who a product is for. For clothing, that means an age group and a gender, on top of size and color. Without them, Google cannot confidently match your product to a shopper and holds the listing back.

age_group is required for free listings across Apparel & Accessories and for Shopping ads in several major target countries. When it is missing you can see a disapproval or a "Missing value [age_group]" warning, and the offer needs a valid product-data value before Google can treat the required apparel set as complete. The same check often flags gender, size, and color at the same time.

The five valid age_group values

  • newborn — 0 to 3 months.
  • infant — 3 to 12 months.
  • toddler — 1 to 5 years.
  • kids — 5 to 13 years.
  • adult — teens and older (13+), the right value for most clothing.

Fix it in Shopify, step by step

  1. Open the product in your Shopify admin.
  2. Set the product Category to the correct standard product category (for clothing, that is under Apparel & Accessories). This unlocks the category metafields for that category, including age group, target gender, fabric, and color.
  3. Set the Age group category metafield to the right value (usually adult).
  4. While you are there, set Target gender, Color, and Size too — Google flags these together for apparel, so checking all four reduces repeat edits.
  5. Save, let the Google & YouTube channel resync, then open the product in Merchant Center and check whether the age_group value is present and the diagnostic has cleared.

Fixing many products at once

If a whole collection shares the same age group, do not edit them one by one. Select the products in bulk and apply the category and age group across all of them, or use your feed or product-management tool to bulk-set age group for the affected products. The goal is the same: every apparel product carries a valid age_group value before it reaches Merchant Center.

Setting the value in Shopify is not the finish line — it has to travel through the Google & YouTube channel into Merchant Center. A value that is set in Shopify but never appears in Merchant Center means the sync or the field mapping is the real problem, not the value itself.

Fix the whole apparel attribute set, not just age_group

  • age_group — set the age group category metafield (never leave it implied by product photos).
  • gender — set the target gender category metafield to male, female, or unisex, not just in the description.
  • color — expose a named color or color family as a variant option or color metafield, not only a branded color name.
  • size — expose real size variants (S, M, L or numeric), not size buried in the description.
  • size system — state a regional size system (US, EU, UK) or link a reachable size guide.
  • material — give the fiber composition (cotton, polyester, wool with percentages), not just a branded fabric name.
  • variant grouping — keep related variants under one product so Google can group them.
  • returns — expose a return or exchange path before purchase, not buried or missing.

Why this matters beyond Google

Google is not the only system reading apparel attributes. Buyer-facing product pages, structured data, Shopify category fields, and Merchant Center product data all need to tell the same story about who the product is for.

StoreSteady treats age_group as part of apparel attribute readiness and product-attribute drift. The public scan checks product pages for age group, gender, color, size, material, variant, and return-path evidence; connected scans compare Shopify and Merchant Center sources when you need the source-by-source audit.
