Symptom

Merchant Center shows "Missing value: size [size], color [color], gender [gender], age group [age_group]" for apparel, shoes, or variant-heavy products.

Exact cause

Google flagged this state because Google Merchant Center is missing one or more required apparel product-data attributes such as size [size], color [color], gender [gender], or age group [age_group]. This can happen when Shopify category attributes, variant options, Google product category, or feed mappings do not send the values Google expects.

This is not an age_group-only issue. It usually means Google is missing one or more required apparel attributes in product data, or Google inferred the wrong product category because google_product_category is absent or inaccurate.

Which system wins

For Shopping ads and free listings, accepted Merchant Center product data is the gating truth. Shopify category metafields and storefront schema can supply or reinforce the values, but a public StoreSteady scan only inspects PDP, schema, and storefront evidence until Shopify and Merchant Center are connected.

Correct edit point

Fix the Shopify product category, category metafields, variant options, Google & YouTube mapping, feed rule, or supplemental feed that sends the missing apparel attributes. Use /product-data when the broader question is whether Shopify, storefront, schema, and connected Merchant Center data drift across product attributes.

Manual fix steps

  1. In Merchant Center, open Products → Needs attention and filter for the exact missing value issue.
  2. Open a sampled affected product in Shopify and confirm the product category is the most accurate apparel or shoe category.
  3. Fill the relevant Shopify category metafields or variant attributes for size, color, target gender, and age group where they apply.
  4. Check the Google & YouTube channel, feed app, feed rule, or supplemental feed that sends size [size], color [color], gender [gender], age group [age_group], and google_product_category [google_product_category] to Merchant Center.
  5. Sync or reupload the corrected product data, then verify the diagnostic clears from Merchant Center Needs attention.

Field-specific Shopify fixes

Validation steps

  1. Filter Merchant Center Products → Needs attention for the exact missing value diagnostic and export the affected products.
  2. Open a sample product in Shopify and confirm the Category is the most accurate apparel or shoe category, not uncategorized or an unrelated category.
  3. Confirm size, color, target gender, and age group are present as Shopify category metafields, variant options, Google & YouTube fields, feed rules, or supplemental feed values where they apply.
  4. Run a public scan to confirm the PDP and structured data do not contradict those values; connect Shopify and Merchant Center when you need source-by-source comparison.
  5. Sync or reupload the corrected data and check Merchant Center Needs attention again after Google has had time to process the change.

Audit related storefront signals

Check which related public signals StoreSteady can observe before you connect the app. A scan cannot determine how Google or another platform will classify or resolve the issue.
