Google promotions disapproved: title or applicability mismatch
Fix a promotion when its title describes a different set of products than the promotion’s product applicability.
Symptom
Google flags the promotion for inconsistent applicability. The promotion title may say it applies to one product group, while the structured applicability is set to all products or selects a different group.
Exact cause
This error is about scope, not the discount amount. The long title, product_applicability setting, and eligible product selection must describe the same real checkout offer. A title limited to a category conflicts with all_products when excluded products can receive the promotion feed entry.
Which system wins
Google promotion review has two stages: policy review and SKU review. Under review is usually a wait-state, while a disapproval means the promotion details, landing-page promise, or redemption behavior failed Google’s review.
Correct edit point
Edit the promotion’s long title and its product applicability together. Use specific_products when the offer is limited, then review the mapped eligible products or product filters. Keep all_products only when every submitted product can genuinely receive the stated promotion. Do not broaden eligibility merely to remove the warning if the offer has exclusions.
Worked example
Illustrative example: a store offers 20% off ceramic mugs, but not tumblers, apparel, or gift cards. Its long title says “20% off ceramic mugs,” while product_applicability is all_products. The title is accurate, but the applicability sends a broader scope than the offer. Set the promotion to specific_products and select only the ceramic mug products.
Manual fix steps
- List the products that can receive the discount at checkout, including variant-level exclusions.
- Compare that list with the long title; revise the title only if it names a broader or narrower group than the offer.
- Change product_applicability to specific_products for a limited offer.
- Update the eligible product mapping or filters so they return only qualifying products; check exclusions before saving.
- Resubmit the corrected promotion using its existing promotion ID.
Validation steps
- Pass: the title’s named product group matches every eligible product in the promotion.
- Pass: a qualifying mug receives the stated discount at checkout.
- Pass: a tumbler, apparel item, or gift card cannot receive this mugs-only promotion.
- Fail: all_products remains selected while any product is excluded from the offer.
- Fail: product filters include a product type that the title does not cover.
