Google Merchant Center misrepresentation on Shopify: what to audit before review

A Misrepresentation suspension is an account-level Google policy decision. Audit the public storefront, Shopify data, and private Merchant Center requirements before requesting review.

What this issue means

Misrepresentation is an account-level Google Shopping policy issue, not a single storefront error that a scanner can confirm. Google says it may evaluate the product data, website, account information, and third-party sources when deciding whether a merchant or destination violates this policy.

A clean public storefront audit can expose missing or inconsistent evidence before you request review, but it cannot reveal Google's full evidence, identify the enforcement cause, or predict whether Google will reinstate the account.

Audit every source Google may compare

  • Business identity: make the legal business name, physical address, phone number, and email consistent between the storefront and Merchant Center Business information.
  • Identity verification: complete any government-ID or business-document request shown in Merchant Center. This is private account work and cannot be checked from a public scan.
  • Policy transparency: publish clear shipping, return and refund, privacy, and payment information, then link those pages where shoppers can reach them before checkout.
  • Site function: remove placeholder text or images, repair broken links and unexpected homepage redirects, use HTTPS, and test the full cart and checkout path.
  • Product truth: make titles, descriptions, prices, availability, variants, and product attributes agree between Shopify, the landing page, and the data source Merchant Center receives.
  • Claims and promotions: remove business, product, discount, or affiliation claims that the storefront and checkout cannot support.

Shopify and Merchant Center edit points

  1. In Shopify, update the Contact and About pages, storefront footer, and navigation so business identity and support routes are visible and consistent.
  2. In Shopify admin, review Settings > Policies, publish the actual shipping, refund, privacy, and terms pages, and link them from the storefront.
  3. Open affected products in Shopify and correct the source data for price, availability, descriptions, variants, identifiers, and required attributes.
  4. Test the live storefront anonymously: product links, policy links, social links, cart, payment path, and mobile checkout must work without placeholder content or dead ends.
  5. In Merchant Center, review Products > Needs attention, View setup and policy issues, Business information, identity-verification requests, and the data source that owns the products.
  6. Compare representative products in Merchant Center with their live Shopify pages before selecting I fixed the issue or I disagree with the issue.

What the StoreSteady scan can and cannot do

The free scan can inspect crawled public pages for visible policy evidence, placeholder content, crawl access, and public product evidence. Those findings are a pre-review checklist, not a Merchant Center diagnosis or a complete site-wide link audit.

The scan cannot read warning emails, Merchant Center settings, identity documents, review status, cooldown state, linked-account history, or third-party evidence. Google alone decides the account outcome.

Request review carefully

  • Finish the website, product-data, business-information, and identity-verification work that applies to the account before requesting review.
  • Use the exact action Merchant Center offers: I fixed the issue when you corrected it, or I disagree with the issue only when you can support the appeal accurately.
  • If the review control is disabled, use the cooldown expiration shown in Merchant Center. Google says support cannot bypass a cooldown and later unsuccessful reviews may increase it.
  • Google says a one-week cooldown may begin after an unresolved second review attempt. Do not treat that as a guaranteed schedule for every account or as a resolution estimate.
  • If the issue remains unclear after the audit, use Google or Google & YouTube app support rather than submitting repeated unsupported requests.

Common questions

Can StoreSteady tell me why Google suspended my Merchant Center account?

No. StoreSteady can identify related public storefront gaps, but it cannot access Merchant Center notices, private account settings, identity verification, review state, or the other evidence Google may use.

Will fixing every public trust signal reinstate my account?

There is no reinstatement guarantee. Public storefront fixes can address part of Google's checklist, while Google may also require private account, identity, product-data, or appeal work.

How long will a Misrepresentation review take?

StoreSteady does not provide a review or resolution estimate. Follow the status and any cooldown expiration shown in Merchant Center, and use Google support when the account instructions remain unclear.
